Links between microbiota and disease

An imbalance in the microbiota can lead to dietary and metabolic disorders. In the case of type 2 diabetes in particular, a diet rich in fat and sugar affects the intestinal microbiota, which in turn promotes the appearance of symptoms of the disease through a deficiency in certain beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia muciniphila or other bacteria that play a role in the metabolism of sugars and fats. In obese or overweight people, the microbiota has lost its quality and diversity. An unsuitable diet, combined with a lack of physical activity and dysbiosis, can trigger metabolic syndrome and encourage a range of pathologies, including cardiovascular disease.

Imbalance in the microbiota does not only affect digestive function. More and more researchers are pointing to a correlation between Alzheimer’s disease and the intestinal microbiota, particularly in terms of the action of amyloid peptide-type proteins in the development of this pathology, but also cancer. Studies have shown the role of the microbiota in the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatments.

Anxiety, mood disorders and Parkinson’s disease have also been mentioned in cases of dysbiosis, given the decline in bacteria associated with the anti-inflammatory properties of the intestines, among other things. Allergies, food intolerance or hypersensitivity, and atopic conditions are also among the main diseases associated with microbiota imbalance and its consequence, intestinal permeability.

From a digestive point of view, microbiota imbalance is associated with pathologies such as “irritable bowel syndrome” or “functional colopathy”, chronic inflammatory bowel disease or IBD (haemorrhagic rectocolitis, Crohn’s disease, etc.), SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), candidiasis, etc…

My specialities

The microbiota

“All disease begins in the intestines”. What if nutritionists were to prove the truth of this statement made by Hippocrates, the “father of medicine”, over 2000 years ago ? At the root of this conviction lies a purely scientific explanation: the intestinal microbiota.

What is the intestinal microbiota?

What is the intestinal microbiota? The intestinal microbiota refers to all the microorganisms that live in the intestines. Numbering in the trillions and categorised into a thousand different species, these microorganisms include bacteria, viruses and yeasts that are in complete symbiosis with our bodies. Their primary function is, of course, to ensure digestion by breaking down food that the body is unable to digest on its own. This applies, for example, to the dietary fibre found in fruit and vegetables.

However, the microbiota also plays a part in optimising our immune system. In babies in particular, it helps the body to identify pathogenic elements from microorganisms that are beneficial to its development. In adults, this protective role occurs when these microorganisms interact with the immune system in the face of pathogens, helping to prevent the onset of many diseases.

Unfortunately, various factors can alter the composition of the intestinal microbiota. This is particularly the case when there is a sudden change in diet. To this can be added a poor lifestyle, including excessive alcohol consumption or smoking, recurrent chronic stress or repeated use of antibiotics. This is known as dysbiosis, or an imbalance in the composition and function of the microbiota. This is very common in people who eat “badly”, when pathogenic microorganisms are found in excess in the intestine to the detriment of those more beneficial to health. While a return to normal can generally be rapid, cases of chronic dysbiosis have been reported, accompanied by pathologies of varying degrees of seriousness.

Discover natural solutions to restore and improve your microbiota

Nadia Rasamoely has specialised in the digestive system for a number of years, as well as in microbiota in general. She has a thorough understanding of the possible implications of an unbalanced microbiota and can offer you a range of solutions to help you regain your health by studying and restoring your microbiota. Depending on the situation, she uses microbiota analysis (RNA16S or Shot Gun), which she will interpret for you in detail, to understand the state of your microbiota and optimise it, exhaled gas analysis (or lactulose/glucose/fructose breath test) to identify possible SIBO/IMO and manage it, or the urinary fungal metabolite test to identify digestive candidiasis, as well as the Parotest for analysis of periodontal and oral microbiota and analysis of short-chain fatty acids and bile acids.
